New Swallowing Therapy Available At CMH

Four speech therapists at CMH are now certified to administer a new swallowing therapy called VitalStim. This treatment is for anyone who has difficulty swallowing due to disease, trauma or aging. It involves placing electrodes on the fine motor nerves of the face and neck. The electrical current strengthens the muscles and allows them to react more quickly, as well as increasing sensation. Speech Language Pathology Director, Katherine Bradley says, “A real plus of this new therapy is that patients can now go home sooner from the hospital and have treatment right here in their own community.” Funds for the new equipment were donated by the CMH Auxiliary.
